Volo Typeface

Volo the typeface was a design project that required me to create a simple display typeface. I was given creative freedom on the art direction of the project and decided to create a Carolingian based typeface with punk aesthetics.

Starting this project required alot of research into the history of written english, referencing historical texts and studying punk culture and how I would apply it to the typeface to ensure that I kept the spirit of carolingian scripture and punk culture in mind whilst sketching out the basic letterforms. After hours of research I managed to sketch out the letterforms you see now and started vectorizing them and ensuring that the typeface followed a set of rules to ensure that the glyphs were evenly sized and had a clear sense of repeatability, after this I ensured that when forming words the typefaced maintained legibility and finetuned the glyphs to maintain that visual harmony as well as reflecting the design intent.

Finishing with the typeface, I made some simple mock-ups to serve as a reference on how one should use this typeface. Visually interesting, spiky and not one to follow rules; this typeface is perfect for any band or poster that wants to go against the crowd and show to the world its mettle.
